Q. How is snow formed?

Snow is commonly formed when water vapour (or steam if you like) changes directly to ice without first becoming a liquid, and then falls to the ground.

Q. What time of the year does it snow in New Zealand?

Snow falls in the winter season, usually between June and September.

Q. What is the coldest time of the day?

It is usually coldest at night when there are no clouds.

Q. Where is New Zealand?

New Zealand is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean (Southern Hemisphere) made up of two main landmasses (the North Island and the South Island).

Q. Where is Coronet Peak?

Coronet Peak is in the south island of New Zealand, about 20 minutes drive from Queenstown.

Q. Where is Mt Hutt?

Q. What is snowboarding?

Snowboarding is a winter sport that involves people sliding down a snow-covered slope while standing on a snowboard. Snowboards are boards, which resemble a wide ski.

Q. What is the best way to learn to ski/snowboard?

Attending snowsports school lessons is a great way to learn how to ski or snowboard. You will learn some new skills and will be with other kids of the same age and ability as you.

Q. Do I need to practice?

Skiing and snowboarding are similar to other sports, so the more you practise the better you will become.

Q. What to do if I lose mum and dad when I'm on the mountain?

If you become separated from your parents at any stage of the day, you should find a member of staff. Staff members will be wearing a uniform and a name badge, and they will help find your mum or dad.

Q. Who are Shred and Spike?

Spike (a Kiwi) and Shred (a Kea) are our mascots. You’ll often fine them both out on the snow playing with friends and having photos taken. You’re always welcome to join them on the mountains when you’re visiting us.

Q. What should I wear?

Make sure you wear warm clothing and lots of layers when you’re on a winter holiday. It is cold in the mountains and weather conditions change quickly, you can add or remove layers depending on the weather and how hot or cold you are feeling.

Q. Will I make new friends?

You will meet lots of people on the mountains, one of the best ways of making new friends is to join in with a group lesson and then you will meet people your own age.

Q. Where can I eat and drink?

You will find different options for food and drink across all three of our mountains, usually located in the restaurants and cafes in the main base buildings.
